Potato Peels.
Today was our annual ecumenical celebration with the Schaub family. As usual we made orgies of latkes and as usual I peeled the potatoes. I did not draw blood, per usual. I managed to get away with merely hacking off half of the fingernail of my left index finger. This makes typing mildly uncomfortable but what can one do.
I do hope that everyone's post-holiday merry-making is going well.
I saw two films this weekend, both thoroughly mediocre.
King Kong was an unnecessary remake of a rather fantastic original film. The film, while beautiful, was excessive. Overly long. Overly drawn out. Overly chock fulla CGI and FX and giant sucker insects that EAT ANDY SERKIS ALIVE. A lot of people died. There were some planes and some indigenous savages. And dinosaurs. And VELOCIRAPTORS. Kong grunted. So did Naomi. Jack Black was showy and somewhat obnoxious and Adrien Brody was merely morose (but still inexplicably HOTT. Two ts). Peter Jackson clearly felt entitled to three hours of my time but it was no Two Towers. On the contrary, I felt as though Peter Jackson had whipped out his cock and masturbated in my face for three hours. What a money shot.
On a sidenote: Congratulations on losing all that weight, Peter Jackson. Though now you look oddly like Dominic Monaghan.
The Producers was another unnecessary film, a mediocre movie made from a fantastic musical that was made from a hysterical movie (OHMYGOD MY HEAD). Susan Stroman is a marvelous theatrical director. This, however, does not translate into being a marvelous film director. I feel that the musical would have been better captured by simply taping the actual stage performance--because really, Stroman's film adaptation was just a little too literal. Too splashy. Too reminiscent of the stage version without improving upon or altering it. Even William Ivey Long's costumes were barely altered--maybe let out for Matthew Broderick, but otherwise, nothing. The best performances were given by Uma Thurman as Ulla and Will Ferrell as Franz Liebkind. Also excellent: cameos by people such as Jon Lovitz and Andrea Martin and Jai Rodriguez in a turban and belly button jewel. Yay cameos. The Producers was fun. It just wasn't...noteworthy. However, do stay through the credits. Will Ferrell does a marvelous rendition of his character's "The Gutten Tag Hop-Clop" and closes the credits with subversive whispers involving Mein Kampf. Also, Mel Brooks finally makes his cameo.
Tomorrow's my first day where I have nothing to actually do. I saw much of my paternal family yesterday and, per usual, was harassed by my aunt for not being "Jewish" enough, whatever that might mean. I am sorry that I don't have any immediate ambitions to study in Israel, my dear aunt--I kind of have two degrees, a minor, and two impending theses on which to work, thankyou.
And that, my lovelies, is all I have tonight.
